Great Bridge

Great Bridge is a community located in Chesapeake. Its name is derived from the American Revolutionary War Battle of Great Bridge, which took place on December 9, 1775 and resulted in the final removal of British government from the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. The original Great Bridge formed a natural defense point since it was on the only road leading south from Norfolk toward North Carolina, it was bordered on both sides by the Great Dismal Swamp, and the access to the bridge on both sides was via narrow causeways. Today we appreciate this even greater bridge because it allows our autos to easily get to the OBX and back. Photo by @ted_ulrich.
